From: Nicholas Clark Date: 17:33 on 16 May 2005 Subject: software that turns flow control back on I want my terminal to have software flow control off. off **OFF** dammit. So that I can use control S for forward search. So all the irritating little things that manage to turn it back on can die die die in /dev/null where they never should have emerged from in the first place. Buggeroff. **NOW** Nicholas Clark
From: David Cantrell Date: 17:09 on 16 May 2005 Subject: OpenOffice.ooOOOOOOoooOOOoooook EEEeek! eeek! oooOOOOOK! Bastard software, used to have a nice simple name like Open Office, but now the crack monkeys have been at it and we're meant to call it O0o, or oOo, or ooo ooo ooo ooo-oo-ooo ooo-oo-ooo or doobie-doo or something equally stupid. But that's not what I hate right now. Right now, I have two documents open, in two windows. Both contain tables. In both documents, my cursor is in a table cell. In the active document (you know, the one that my window mangler has highlighted, and where the cursor moves around when i mash my fists on the keyboard, and THE ONE I JUST FUCKING RIGHT-CLICKED IN TO GET A CONTEXT MENU) i select the "row" option, then "delete" and it deletes the current row in the wrong document. I find this to be quite annoying. Jeeves, fetch my sword!
From: Juerd Date: 22:56 on 13 May 2005 Subject: Firefox hate No, I did not want you to close that tab with the textarea in which I had just written a lot, when I accidentally pressed ^W instead of ^V. Damnit. Now I have to start over. Juerd
From: Simon Wistow Date: 11:46 on 13 May 2005 Subject: dumb phone transfer software I gte shiny new phone. Phne is not by same people as old phone. Attempt to send all contacts across via the magic of bluetooth. Of course it fails. Use a friend's iSync to download old contacts and then sync them to new phone - it all appears to work apart from where I had lovely entries which represented one person with multiple phone numbers now I have multiple entries per person. This, however, I decide I can live with. However I've just realised that the numbers have been trasnferred and, somewhere en-route, something has decided that the +44 I'd carefully prepended to every number should be truncated to 44. Which means none of the numbers work when I dial out. GAH
From: Nicholas Clark Date: 12:13 on 11 May 2005 Subject: svn add $ sudo svn --username=nick add ... Subcommand 'add' doesn't accept option '--username arg' Type 'svn help add' for usage. All the rest do. An error message of "yah, boo, sucks to be you" would be about as helpful. Die die die. Nichoals Clark
From: Luke A. Kanies Date: 03:56 on 11 May 2005 Subject: NVidia hate I know this won't win any awards for stupid error codes, but still... After trying Xinerama for a while to see if it reduced the temperature of my video card (it didn't), I finally had to log out again, so I was going to switch back to TwinView, since it's slightly faster (being in hardware, rather than software, or something). And even though the exact same config worked a couple of months ago (other than some judicious commenting to disable xinerama and enable twinview), this is the error message I got: (WW) NVIDIA(0): TwinView cannot be enabled when a GPU is shared between (WW) NVIDIA(0): multiple X screens. Now, for those who don't know what TwinView is, it's, well, it's something that NVidia provides to, well, allow a GPU to be shared between multiple X screens. Yes, that's right, this function doesn't work when you try to use it; otherwise, it works fine. Yes, I'm assuming I broke the config somehow, but, geez, how does this kind of error even get added to the driver? It's just astounding. Back to Xinerama and it's slow crappiness, I guess...
From: Geoff Richards Date: 12:33 on 04 May 2005 Subject: firefox, it's a fecking text area I haven't been able to work out how to get Firefox into this most special of modes, but sometimes, very occasonally, it enhances my wiki-editing experience by providing an impromtu search facility in the text area. Which would be handy, if it wasn't initiated by the '/' key. Which funnily enough I sometimes want to type. Now, I can see how it might have got confused about when to recognise '/' and pop up the (normally welcome) little search bar, but what the hell does it think it's doing when the single quote key does the same thing? There must be some sort of XUL keybinding, only enabled under 'special' conditions, which is bound to a function like this: void fuckadoodledoo (char c) { textarea.insert(c); if (c == '/' || c == '\'') { search_toolbar.show(); search_toolbar.textbox.insert(c); textarea.move_cursor_somewhere_uninteresting(); user.palpitate(); } } At least I was able to do my editing -- it just required lots of mouse-waving and swearing.
From: Nicholas Clark Date: 11:35 on 04 May 2005 Subject: bash nick@switch .$ pwd pwd: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory So, yes, the current directory is deleted. But when I attempt to tab-complete on an absolute path: nick@switch .$ cd ~/Psymlink-hook: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory what the fuck? hateful thing. ~ shell-expands to an absolute path. What's with this getcwd crap? You don't need no stiiiinking cwd here. Shut it, and get on with giving me completions on $HOME/P* Nicholas Clark
From: David Cantrell Date: 10:45 on 04 May 2005 Subject: GNU info and GNU cpp I'm following a trail of documentation trying to find out about the #line directive in cpp, which I only just found out exists. But this is a Linux system, so the meat of the docs is hidden in GNU info instead of in a nice tasty easily-searchable man page. GNU info is hateful in itself, as it has the world's most fucked up user interface. The info docs for cpp - at which I am pointed from the cpp man page - seem to be nothing but a word-for-word copy of the inadequate man page.
